BBQ Sauce

I was looking for a simple BBQ sauce recipe that is not too spicy, easy to make and is flavorful – rare combination. In a future post I will list another recipe that had 15 or so ingredients, was a bit of a hassle to make but was nevertheless worth the hassle. This one, however, met all 3 of my criteria and was an all-around good find.

The recipe is re-posted here for your convenience but here’s the link to the original Foodnetwork page, with compliments to The Neeleys (there is a video too; ours, though, is work in progress!)

Ingredients

2 cups ketchup
1 cup water
1/2 cup apple cider vinegar
5 tablespoons light brown sugar
5 tablespoons sugar
1/2 tablespoon fresh ground black pepper
1/2 tablespoon onion powder
1/2 tablespoon ground mustard
1 tablespoon lemon juice
1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce

Directions

In a medium saucepan, combine all ingredients. Bring mixture to a boil, reduce heat to simmer. Cook uncovered, stirring frequently, for 1 hour 15 minutes.

Cuisintips

I reduced the cooking time from 1 hr/15 to about 1 hr/5 – the sauce thickened faster than I thought. We kept the sauce in the fridge for a couple of weeks, and that only made it thicker and more flavorful.
